Joe Dirt wasn’t much of a success with the critics. It has an average rating of three out of 10 and one of the well-known multiple review sites. Roger Ebert and his partner Richard Roeper both gave the movie a resounding thumbs down. They called it strained and predictable and said the storyline was absurd. However, they did complement Spade’s performance.

Even though the critics didn’t like it in earned $27 million in the United States. That means Joe Dirt was profitable. Its budget was only $16 million. It also made it to number one in New Zealand. But David Spade joked that New Zealand is only the size of Kmart. Dennis Miller has a radio show where he frequently talks about the movie. He’s even interviewed David Spade about it.

Strange character Joe Dirt works as a janitor at a Los Angeles radio station. A producer sees Joe being bullied in the hall and decides that his white trash attitude could become popular. As a result he puts Joe on the air to be interviewed by a disc jockey. Most of the movie consists of Joe relating his life in this interview.

The story of Joe Dirt begins with the pursuit of his love interest Brandy. When Brandy’s dog dies Joe feels the need to seek out his parents. He travels the country. He has many strange adventures. He also meets a number of odd characters. He also takes on many odd jobs. The last of these is his job in the boiler room of the radio station.

Eventually Joe Dirt gives up a search and returns to Brandy. He finds out that she knows that his parents were killed while he was visiting the Grand Canyon. His whole search has been in vain.

Joe Dirt doesn’t realize that the listeners love him. He’s become a media sensation. A woman claiming to be his mother calls him. It turns out it’s all a scam. She’s trying to sell figurines using his name. They really are his parents, but they’ve only contacted him to make money.

At the end of the movie Joe Dirt tries to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge. He’s saved by a bungee cord. But he hits his head on the way back up. He later wakes up and Brandy’s house surrounded by many of the people he’s met on his journey. He realizes that these are his family members. That’s pretty silly. No wonder critics didn’t like the movie.

Joe Dirt is proof that Hollywood is desperate for good movies.
